nam june paik rollin’ in his grave

saw this art history poster on design milk.

it was all good and fun (hockney owns california/much owns despair) until i got to: “june paik owns television.”

HELLO. his name is nam june paik, making paik the family name and nam june the first name. DUH. do they, LIKE not know anything at all about video installation art? i mean, SERIOUSLY.

(annnnd the only reason why i know is thanks to all the coffee table books i had to entertain myself with as a child.)

sagmeister says: keep a notebook

“By far the most interesting project I have been involved in the last years is a series of typographic works that came out of a list I found in my diary under the title, ‘Things I have learned in my life so far.’ Every one of these pieces was published, and so far they have appeared as French and Portuguese billboards, a Japanese annual report, on German TV, in Austrian magazines, as a New York direct mailer, and an American poster campaign. The series was influenced by my grandfather (who was educated in sign painting, and I grew up with many of his pieces of wisdom around the house), by American artist Jenny Holzer, as well as the rustic wooden signs available in tourist stores all over my hometown of Bregenz in Austria.” – sagmeister, on his life so far. read here.

and i wholeheartedly agree. all my best thinking comes from writing. and all the rest come from reading the snippets of conversations, insights, and general reveries i have had the smarts to jot down somewhere.

kubideh kitchen

conflict kitchen is a take-out restaurant that only serves cuisine from countries the united states is in conflict with. started up by artists, academics, and general geniuses, kubideh kitchen is a politico-culinary nook in pittsburgh that rotate identities every 4 months (currently: iran) to show case the culture, politics, and general societal “milieu” of countries that amerikiyee finds herself at odds with. if the role of art (pop, performance, or otherwise) is to showcase the doings and undoings of our time, what better way than this: north american brainchild take-out restaurant meets traditional persian cuisine. nom nom.

if you don’t believe me, see for yourself.

(fantastic graphic design thanks to this guy here).

art according to schnabel

i have been fascinated with the schnabels for some time now. and this week’s t magazine has a q&a with its rising member, vito schnabel – art collector/curator extraordinaire.

one thing caught my eye.

To the question, “What does it take to get attention as an artist nowadays?” Vito answers:

“Luck. Good work. Being at the right place at the right time. Being a hard worker.”

which is not too far off from advice that a veteran reporter would give to a rookie start up. perhaps and the drive to be unsparingly critical, but sometimes, i can’t help but wonder if luck is the deciding factor in more things than we care to admit.

whisper “thank you”

“And despite the physical and emotional discomfort of these encounters — and the draining nature of the work — all the performers interviewed said they were often exhilarated by their daily shifts (some of which are now as short as an hour 15 minutes, because of several fainting episodes). There are plenty of magical moments with strangers, including those who innocently touch bare skin, whisper “thank you” or do improvisational little dances that have the usually stoic performers cracking up.”
